German toy company Conrad (formerly known as Gescha produces models of heavy commercials under the name Conrad, including construction equipment, in 1:50th scale. The wide range of vehicles offered includes those of MAN and Mercedes Benz.
The name of Conrad was first used in the late 1960s, being a brand name of the parent company Gescha, which had been founded in Nuremberg in 1923. Gescha had included die-cast models of heavy commercials within its range.
The Conrad brand name has also been used for 1/43rd scale, including cars and small commercials, including many by Audi and Volkswagen.
During the 1970s the Conrad name was used more and more often and the Gescha name less and less. By 1980, the Gescha name was pretty much eliminated, but there are reports of it still being used during the mid-1980s. By this time the company name was completely changed to Conrad. Oddly enough, the history of Conrad Models on the website does not even mention the venerable name of Gescha.
Conrad Models has a close and very precise relationship with NZG Models, also of Nurnberg. They compete heavily for similar contracts to make precision models for truck, crane and other heavy equipment manufacturers all over the world (see Conrad website listed below), but it should not be forgotten that this now ubiquitous business was basically started under the Gescha name.
