Alps toys

ALPS made battery-operated mechanical toys (robots, cars, musical chimps, clowns, wind-up animals) and produced some of the better quality Japanese toys throughout the post-war years. Alps Shoji Ltd. Tokyo, Japan was founded in 1948 and was specialized in toy vehicles and novelties. A lot of their toys were battery operated; made of mixed tinplate and tin. Space toys are among the most popular. The distinctive logo (the word "ALPS" printed on top of a mountain peak) of this Japanese company makes it easy to identify.

alps toys

Many of their toys had multiple actions, for example, a convertible car would not only move forward and back, but the top would also roll down and go back up.

This ingenuity ensured the toys' popularity, and for a time, they were in great demand.

However, despite their success, the company abandoned toy making some time in the early 1970s to become a manufacturer of consumer and industrial electronics and remains in the electronics business today.

Popular Alps toys were:

Need a steering wheel and windshield for an alps speed challenger. Any idea where i can get them?
Difficult to find these parts. There are some Facebook groups with dedicated collectors where you could try, or you could try this page now and then to see if parts pop up: Alps Speed Challenger. There are also some part shops to be found through Google.

Hello, have a mechanical "Drag Shovel" by Alps. Toy was found in box (box lid has great action graphics of machine working at a job site, along with instructions on toy operation and features)pretty much undisturbed, and it appears to have seen little use. Bright and colorful toy has boom (nr.K-77, displayed on boom) assembly detached to fit in box with original dividers and inserts. All in good condition. Box itself (thin cardboard) is also in good shape. Toy rubber tracks have hardened and broken apart over time from dry rot. Inserted batteries (battery compartment was clean), followed operating instructions, and the toy came partially to life! Motor runs, but not all functions work. Would there be more than one motor? Would same type of motor have been used in other toys made by the company? Have not been able to find similar examples of this model for parts or comparison. Toy appears to be of late 50's or early 60's(?) vintage. Any help or info about toy is appreciated. Thanks much!
Hi, I'm afraid I don't know much about this toy, sorry. Last year one (without box) was sold for 26 GBP (about 32 USD) through

Hi, I have a small Pop Pop boat with a CK trademark on the boat but with CK and ALPS trademarks on the original box. I know that CK were very big before WW2 and ALPS started in about 1948. Do you have any information on the post WW2 relationship between CK and ALPS? Was the CK company taken over by ALPS? Thanks
Not sure about this... CK (Kuramochi Shoten) was one of the largest pre-war toy companies in Japan and distributed throughout the U.S. by The George Borgfeldt Co. Two of their main employees fearing the companies demise after WWII left to form Nomura and Alps (in 1948).
